To assist in bringing transparency across the recycling industry, GemCorp has moved towards technology and has developed the UniGem platform based on Blockchain technology.

UniGem platform has been designed to act as technology backed recycle program and provide Circular economy as a service. It provides a marketplace for EPR & Plastic Credits with complete traceability of sourcing of waste and their recycling information. The blockchain system provides QR based tracking system and unique hash keys to identify and ensure that the integrity & reliability of the waste collection and recycling data and confirms the circular loop.

GemCorp holds the trademark rights to UNIGEM®.

Waste Disposal

waste disposalSustainable waste disposalSustainableDisposal

The recycling industry in India is highly unorganized, with many of its actors still working in informal and precarious conditions. GemCorp is trying to organize the sector by establishing specific minimum standards for its partners.

GemCorp identifies aggregators to partner with. After the background check and verification process, GemCorp provides them with Baling Machines at zero investment. In return, GemCorp agrees with them to purchase a monthly minimum quantity of waste at prevailing market rates and places.

The terms and conditions followed by aggregators are as below:
• Aggregators must maintain a register of waste pickers from whom the waste is collected
• They must ensure payments are made to waste pickers through banking channels
• They must ensure all their employees are covered under the social benefits program of the government
• They must ensure they employ NO CHILD LABOUR

By engaging with more intermediaries, GemCorp organizes the sector and produces a win-win-win situation, where the company wins by securing more input, the intermediaries win through a free baler machine and secure monthly sale contracts for their output, and waste pickers win by being identified and by being included in GemCorp’s Reclaimers Outreach Program.

It is estimated that there are around 4 million waste pickers in India, who make a living from picking up, cleaning, sorting and segregating recyclable waste to finally sell it to intermediaries with which companies like GemCorp engage for the procurement of their raw materials.

This work is vital for the recycling industry; however, pickers do their work in precarious and informal conditions. Most of these workers are women or children, with no access to social security, employee protection, and being frequently harassed by the police and municipalities.

GemCorp recognized the importance of the work waste pickers do and is committed to improve their living and working conditions.

Through its associated baler facilities, the company identifies the waste collectors and their families, provide them with monthly groceries and toys for their children.

In addition, GemCorp is committed to improving the working conditions of waste aggregators by providing better infrastructure and training and ensuring they have proper IDs, bank accounts, and social security benefits.

Extended Producer's Responsibility (EPR)

EPREPR Audit

GemCorp incorporates a transparent supply chain to ensure complete traceability and EPR compliance.

Extended Producer Responsibility or EPR is a policy that directs all plastic producers, importers and brand owners (PIBOs) to be responsible for product disposal once the consumer no longer has any use for it.

In March 2016 the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Plastic Waste Management (PWM 2016) Rules. According to the amended PWM 2016, all PIBOs shall segregate and store the waste generated by them in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules.

PIBOs are also supposed to handover segregated wastes to authorised waste processing or disposal facilities or deposition centers. Failure to do so could result in heavy penalties in the near future.

In order to meet waste compliance, PIBOs rely on private Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) such as GemCorp.
